GREAT SEASON FOR CONNEMARA UNDER 13’S

The long season for the U-13’s finally came to a close on Sunday last in glorious sunshine on the hallowed turf of the Corinthians main pitch. The season finished on a high for the young Connemara team in the Connacht Plate final against Galwegians.
After a challenging league which seen the team travel the length and breadth of the province, and results not reflecting the hard work that each and every one put in through the indifferent weather during the winter at training. Although not all the games went the way of the young Black’s but in each and every encounter the lessons learned from the previous game and from training they seemed to stand up and put everything into practice and they improved with each and every game.
The young Blacks took to the field on Sunday last with nothing to prove to anybody about the quality that they possessed within their ranks, the weather was great and the atmosphere within the camp was buoyant, the game started at a great speed and the young Connemara men were well up for the challenge and after about 10 minutes the Galwegians backs found a small but of space and they managed to make their way in to score the opening try in the corner, they failed with the conversion, the Connemara lads seemed to wake up at this stage and dominated the possession for the remainder of the half and a great break from his own 10 meter line saw Will Smith run with the ball and he managed to evade numerous Galwegian players to cross the line and touch down under the posts, the try was a great individual effort but was set up by committed tackling and rucking by the team, the try was converted by John F Conneely . The half time score was Connemara 7 Galwegians 5.
The second half commenced in the same style as the first half had finished but again a momentary lapse in concentration lead to the Galwegian team again crossed the whitewash to score another try in the corner and again they converted which left just left the gap at 5 points, 12-7. Again the fight came back into the belly of the Blacks, and they produced some great rugby in the second half. Time and time again they made their way into the Galwegians 22 and were close on a number of occasions but the final ball didn’t come. Eventually all the Connemara pressure paid off and they managed to cross the whitewash again with a bulldozing run by Ian Staunton, which was again converted by John F, this gave Connemara a 2 point lead with 10 minutes to go. For the remaining time the game was played between both sets of 10 meter lines with the Boys in Black making tackle after tackle and putting everything on the line to maintain their advantage but alas that was not to happen the referee gave Galwegians a penalty just inside the Connemara 10 meter line and for reasons known only unto him he gave an extra 10 meters. Following the penalty Galwegians brought the ball out wide and threatened the Connemara line, but the Connemara line held up and absorbed and repelled the attack for about 3 minutes before the young Galwegians eventually went over again in the corner. With that the referee sounded the fulltime whistle and the season came to an end with a final score of 17-14.

On behalf of all the coaches and all involved I want to thank all the players and their parents for all their dedication and commitment they have shown over the season and to the parents who helped to cook and dish up the food after the games.

James Staunton

Connemara ended their season the way they started it- with a victory over a Kildare side at the Monastery Field. Saturday’s victory over NUIM Barnhall was impressive for a number of reasons; Barnhall had the incentive of promotion with a victory and Connemara came into the game on the back of four consecutive defeats.

If one side looked like a team playing for promotion it was Connemara. The Clifden based side started well with Richard Bourke coming close after a pass from Jack Vaughan. Connemara looked dangerous when they added width to their game, and it dually paid off as Richard Bourke showed searing pace down the wing, Bourke was tackled agonisingly close to the line but the Beach Road native managed to offload to Eugene Conroy who had the simple task of falling over the line. Sean Joyce was agonisingly close with his conversion attempt, but Connemara deservedly led 5-0.

Connemara’s try stirred Barnhall into action but they were hit by a resolute Connemara defence. Connemara hit Barnhall with the proverbial sucker punch soon after. Richard Bourke charged down a box kick just outside his own 22, the ball bounced favourably into the hands of Bourke who went the distance of the pitch for Connemara’s second try. Once again Sean Joyce was agonisingly close with his conversion attempt, 10-0 Connemara and good value for their lead.

It was proving to be one of those days for Barnhall. Their passing lacking any cohesion and they had many handling errors, but Connemara deserve kudos for ruthlessly punishing these errors. Connemara would soon have a third try after a typical inside run by David McDonagh. McDonagh collected an inside pass and powered his way over the line for his sixth try of the season. Sean Joyce knocked over the extras for a 17-0 lead. McDonagh’s try drew him level with Richard Bourke on six tries apiece for the season.

Barnhall’s game improved after McDonagh’s try, with the Kildare side coming close on a number of occasions, but each attack was met by the same Connemara resistance. The half time whistle blew with Connemara leading 17-0.

Barnhall would finally break their duck soon after half with a well worked move. Their conversion left it 17-7 to Connemara. Any chance of a Barnhall comeback was dashed when veteran scrumhalf David Keogh combined wonderfully with Sean Joyce to dive in under the posts to secure Connemara’s bonus point and victory. The final whistle blew with the score 24-7.

In conclusion, Connemara’s season has been extremely positive. Since losing centre Benny Bester early in the season Connemara have focused on developing young local players. Coach Peter Bracken deserves all the credit in the world for the on field results and also his blooding of youngsters. Here’s hoping for more of the same next season.

Connemara Under 10’s attended their Connacht Blitz in Ballina on March 24th and did very well indeed, winning all their games. They competed with many teams from all over the province and really deserved their reward. Congratulations to the players, coach Peter Keane, and the parents and families of the successful children.

Under 13’s

James Staunton’s Under 13’s side had a fine quarter final win on Sunday 1st April against Buccaneers, winning 71-15. They then met Oughterard on Good Friday evening in the semi-final at The Monastery Field at 6:30pm and won the game 20-10. The next outing is the final of the U13 plate against Galwegians, which will be played in Corinthians RFC on Sunday 15th April. We wish this fine outfit every success.

In years to come the records will state that Connemara have lost consecutive games, but regular Connemara followers will realise that the previous fixtures came against the top two teams, Cashel and Banbridge respectively, and had it not been for misfortune Connemara could have won both games. Connemara’s latest defeat came at the hands of Ulster side Banbridge, but Connemara’s 20 point haul and positive performance is encouraging. The game was barely minutes old when Connemara took the lead. A jinking run by centre Paddy Madden caused havoc in the Banbridge defence, Madden’s intuitive pass was received by winger Richard Bourke who showed the pace he is renowned for and finished for a fabulous try. Sean Joyce added the conversion to take the score to 7-0 to Connemara.
Despite taking the lead, Connemara had to spend long periods of the first half under pressure from Banbridge. Banbridge’s pressure eventually paid dividends when full back Brendan Ward, who proved an extremely elusive runner throughout, went in for a virtuoso try. Banbridge were wide with their conversion attempt leaving the score to 7-5 to Connemara. Banbridge’s class showed as they went in for a second try after some good hands by their backs, the successful conversion lead to Banbridge taking a 12-7 lead. Captain Sean Joyce looked assured in both play and with the boot, and it was a Joyce penalty that clawed back another three points for Connemara. With the momentum generated by Joyce’s penalty, Connemara pressed for the lead and were dually rewarded when Joyce slotted a penalty from near the half way line, taking the score to 13-12 to the Clifden based side. Connemara went into half time with the slenderest of advantages.
Banbridge started the second half with renewed vigour and were rewarded with a try, taking the score to 19-13 to Banbridge. For the neutral this game would have been spectacular, and keeping with the games pattern Connemara once again took the lead. Lock Bernard Keaney showed his considerable experience by picking a great line off Sean Joyce’s pass to go in under the posts to take the score to 18-19 to Banbridge, Sean Joyce once again converted to once again give Connemara a slender one point lead. Staring down the barrel of a defeat, Banbridge rallied and put Connemara under concerted pressure. Connemara’s Kiwi flanker Richie Byrne was sin binned for a tackle off the ball, Byrne acted to save a certain try. From the resultant penalization Banbridge opted to take a scrum instead of a penalty, and were rewarded after various picks and goes saw the Ulster side cross for their fourth and bonus point try. The conversion was missed, but the Ulster side still held a five point lead. Banbridge’s powerful scrum was evident all day and they were rather harshly from a Connemara point of view rewarded a penalty try in the final minutes to deny Connemara a losing bonus point. Connemara can take many positives from the defeat, they scored a respectable number of points against a team chasing promotion, and had it not been for a number of questionable refereeing decisions could have won. Saturday’s game also saw young Renvyle man Derek Heanue start his first Senior game for the club, and he looked extremely assured throughout. Winger Peter O’Toole also made his seasonal debut; it is encouraging to see young locals coming through the youth ranks.

CASHEL VISIT AND OUR PLAYERS

On our visit to Cashel, one had an opportunity to reflect on the great commitment of our players, coaches, and all concerned with Connemara rugby. Many of our players travel great distances to practice and play, for example, Emmet and James from Dublin, Paddy from Athlone, David from Galway etc. Connemara could have beaten Cashel on Saturday, if all our players could train twice a week every week. This is also the opinion of our coach Peter Bracken. Cashel have a regular panel of twenty five players available for training at their disposal every week, also they possess extra pitches to train on. So one must appreciate the great efforts of everyone in our club, and see if any arrangements can be made for a number of extra sessions.

Our visit south was very enjoyable, and we had a very genuine and warm welcome from all in the Tipperary venue. Sadly, we lost a bonus point, as Cashel scored a try in the last play of the game, in the eight minute of injury time. In the first half, they got three easy tries when playing with a huge wind. Connemara shattered them midway through the second half, with two excellent converted tries and a penalty in a ten minute blitz. Then a number of Cashel “injuries” broke the momentum. Hopefully, many will come and support our team in the last four games of the season, Banbridge and Barnhall at home, and Sligo and Suttonians away.
At the beginning of the season, Connemara’s ambition was to win all games, and at least be in the top half of the table. In the past two years we have lost, Gerard Burke and Michael Aspell to Canada, Gary Conroy and Martin O’Malley to London, Eoin Bourke and others to Australia, Macdara Breathnach and Conor O’Malley to fishing trawlers and Martin Coyne and Oisin Conneely to college’s in Dublin and Cork, Darragh Sweeney to Madagascar, and many other talented youngsters who had to emigrate. So, we produce a multitude of talent, and sadly because of a lack of investment in our area, we will continue to lose many more great players. On the positive side, we have all our own players from under eights upwards, and two young men who learned their rugby here, have starred for Irish teams, John O’Brien and Tiernan O’Halloran. So if players, coaches, parents and committee members keep up the great work, we will have many more international and inter pro players.

The juggernaut that is Cashel R.F.C. continued apace at the expense of a brave Connemara on Saturday last, the eventual 31-17 score-line flatters Cashel somewhat.
The old cliché says it’s a game of two halves, and Saturday was indeed a game of two halves, Cashel dominated the first half, scoring three unanswered tries, whilst Connemara dominated the second, scoring all of their seventeen points and looking the better side. Aided by a massive wind at their backs, Cashel spent the entire first half assaulting Connemara’s line, and were rewarded by scoring three tries. As impressive as Cashel looked in the first half, two of their three tries came off the back of Connemara mistakes. It seems that scoring from chargedowns is nearly fashionable in modern rugby, and Cashel profited it from it on Saturday. Windy conditions made kicking extremely difficult, and Connemara’s kick was charged down, the ball fell into ‘no mans land’, the ball was seized by Cashel scrumhalf McGlinchey who rode a Connemara tackle before going in for the games opening try. Cashel centre Silke added the conversion to take the score to 7-0.
Aside from their excellence in the set piece, Cashel were extremely impressive at the breakdown and this nous at the breakdown led to their second try. A Connemara fielded a long Cashel kick and opted to run, he ran hard and straight at Cashel defence, he was tackled hard, and in the process the ball was turned over, Cashel scrum half McGlinchey’s box kick deceived the Connemara defence and the ball fell into the hands of Cashel’s other winger Quinlan who went in for the Tipperary sides second try. Silke added his second conversion for a 14-0 lead for the Spafield based side. Cashel scored their third when winger, and brother of Munster flanker Denis Leamy, crossed for Cashel’s third, Silke converted for 21-0. The half time whistle blew with Connemara staring down the barrel of a big defeat. Connemara made some changes at half time, David Keogh replaced Michael O’Toole at scrum half and Emmet Ferron replaced Kevin Barry at prop. Making his seasonal debut, O’Toole was very impressive, his distribution was top notch all game long and he never looked overawed against a very impressive Cashel team. The introduction of Keogh added extra experience to the Connemara backline. Emmet Ferrons looked extremely impressive when he was introduced, he solidified the Connemara scrum and looked impressive in the loose. Connemara seemed the much fitter side in the second half and Cashel looked ramshackle at times. The first Connemara try came from a familiar source. After one of his typically mazy runs, full back Alan Keogh sauntered through the centre of Cashel’s defence before touching down for Connemara’s first try of the game. Whilst Connemara were dominant in the second half, they still needed to defend, and will be thankful to Bernard Keaney for some big tackles.
The second Connemara try came from another familiar source, Alan Keogh once again ran at the heart of the Cashel defence, he eventually offloaded to winger David McDonagh, who continued his impressive season, to cross the line. Sean Joyce converted for 21-14 to Cashel. Despite all the superlatives they have received this season, Cashel looked nervy when under the cosh. There was another Connemara debut as young Derryinver man Derek Heanue made his senior bow. The former Galway minor footballer looked like he had played seniors for years and was extremely impressive, particularly in his tackling. Cashel’s aforementioned dominance at the breakdown continued, and they were rewarded with a penalty which Silke slotted to make the score 24-14 to Cashel. Connemara then added a penalty of their own, after Cashel had infringed at the breakdown, Sean Joyce impressively added a long range penalty to take the score to 24-17, enough to give Connemara a losing bonus point. Cashel were desperate for their bonus point, and were fortunate to get one. Connemara knocked on from Cashel’s restart and after Cashel’s scrum and various pick and goes, Cashel scored through scrum half McGlinchey, it was cruel luck for Connemara as the score came eight minutes into injury time.
Looking at the game in perspective Connemara can be extremely proud of their efforts, particularly in the second half. Connemara’s 17 points at Cashel was the most any team have scored at Cashel this season, lets not forget that Cashel had run every single one of their League games this season, winning on average by 27 points in each game. The Connemara team was composed wholly of players from, or living in Connemara. Add to that the impressive debuts of O’Toole and Heanue and one could rightly assume that the future’s bright for Connemara R.F.C.

Anybody who attended at the Monastery Field on Saturday and Sunday, 11 & 12 Feb., would feel reassured about the future of Connacht rugby. At 11:30 Connemara played Ballaghadreen in the under 15 Connacht cup. The home team did not get things too easy for the first half, and the well coached Ballaghadreen team seemed well grounded in the game, and did themselves proud with some fine running rugby. Connemara eventually won 17-5.
Two more games followed between “Dunamara” Ladies and Westport ladies at under 16’s and under 18’s level. Dunamara is a combination of Dunmore and Connemara.
Following these games Connemara seniors had a fine training session under coach Peter Bracken.
On Sunday Connemara under 14’s were beaten by a very heavy and physically strong Creggs side. Feature of this game was a fine try on the right wing by Jack Moran. All Connemara players played their hearts out and all the young lads deserve great praise.
The under 17 cup game against Castlebar was a rousing game, with Connemara taking an early lead with a fine try, this was erased shortly when Castlebar under the posts after a fine break. Oisin Heffernan of Leinster Schools and Connacht was introduced with eight minutes to go in the first half, and playing at number eight he made an immediate impact with a fine break from a solid Connemara scrum. Shortly after this, and before half time, Connemara took the lead with a fine score. In the second half Oisin Heffernan scored a fine try, and Patrick King made a great dash, cutting through Castlebars midfield, to score the try of the game. T.J. Berry, Mark Staunton and the Recess Joyce’s had brilliant games for Connemara.
Connemara ended up with a very fine 31-7 victory.

Lady luck shone on Navan as they ended Connemara’s unbeaten home run in an ill tempered clash at the Monastery Field on Saturday last.
Connemara’s profligacy was matched only by Navan’s determination and organisation in defence. Navan were under the cosh for long periods of the game, and defended well, but not always legally as their two sin binning’s will prove.
What could go wrong did go wrong for Connemara, conversely Navan scored two unbelievably fortunate tries. Navan’s first was scored after the ball ricocheted cruelly off Richard Bourke’s foot and into the hands of Navan winger Maurice McCauley.
Navan’s second came as Connemara were chasing the game, a long looping pass from Connemara was intercepted by McCauley, and he went the length of the pitch for his and Navan’s second try. Jack Vaughan continued his great record against Navan in what was only a conciliatory try.
It would be remiss to blame the result on Connemara’s lack of luck as, the Clifden based side lacked their usual incisive backs play and their play looked static for long periods of the game. Kudos though, must go to Navan. The Meath men’s lineout worked superbly well and their number eight Leigh Jackson was a superb ball carrier who made yards on each of his barnstorming runs.
Navan started the game better, they had lots of early territory but never looked overly threatening. Referee S.Kierans was whistle happy and blew twice for offside and high tackle against Connemara, Navan place kicker David Sheridan converted both penalties to the score 6-0 to Navan. 6-0 down Connemara came at Navan with the fury of a team hard done by, and the feeling of unjust would continue for Connemara. After a good backs move, started by Sean Joyce, Connemara scored through Richard Bourke. The try which looked legitimate to all onlookers, Navan and Connemara alike, was disallowed by referee Kierans who adjudged that there was crossing in the build up to the try. On a day more suited to big packs, Navan attempted to bludgeon Connemara up front, the game’s opening try came not from force or skill, but rather from luck. Navan fly half Jack Mullins’ long kick downfield headed toward Connemara winger Richard Bourke, Bourke attempted to control the ball with his foot, due to the rain the ball was wet, but the ball bounced of his foot and into the hands of Navan winger Maurice McCauley, McCauley ran unopposed in for the games first try, Navan centre David Sheridan converted for 13-0 for the Meath side.
Connemara responded well and were agonisingly close to scoring through Richard Byrne, but as was the case all game long Navan defended stoutly. Navan were borderline offside all game long and referee S.Kierans penalised them for the very offence on the stroke of half time. Sean Joyce didn’t strike the ball as cleanly as he usually would, but nonetheless the ball flew over for 13-3 at half time. The second half started as the first half ended, with concerted Connemara pressure. Kevin Keogh looked particularly impressive throughout. Connemara tried all manner of plays and moves, but all were met with the same Navan resilience. After being frustrated in their attempts to break through Navan’s defence, Connemara opted for a drop goal, which Sean Joyce slotted with aplomb. At 13-6 with a large chunk of the second half remaining Connemara would have fancied themselves. A black tide headed towards Navans try line, and in the process of attacking, Connemara conceded. It was maybe a case of rushing a tad, but Connemara attempted a long raking pass which was telegraphed by Navan winger Maurice McCauley who went the length of the pitch for his second and Navan’s second of the game. Sheridan added the conversion for 20-6 to Navan. The home crowd, who were vocal until that point became subdued as the realisation swept home that this wouldn’t be Connemara’s day. Undeterred, Connemara continued to push and probe and were rewarded for their industry. Jack Vaughan, who scored a brace of tries against Navan last season, went in for a try in the corner after a good pass by Alan Keogh. Sean Joyce’s conversion was from a difficult angle and the fly half was agonisingly close to scoring. The score was 20-11 to Navan with time ebbing away fast. A knock on in midfield from Connemara gave Navan a scrum, their scrum was strong and they were awarded with a penalty. David Sheridan knocked over the penalty to make the score 23-11 to Navan, never have Connemara conceded so many unlucky points, similarly Navan will never score a more fortuitous victory. Connemara continued to press, but Navan locked the door and the took the victory. Connemara travel to table toppers Cashel in a fortnight, hoping to make amends.
