Connemara RFC 7’s Tournament

July 15th, 2013

Twenty one men’s team and six ladies’ sides took part in this year’s Connemara 7’s tournament, which started on Friday evening with a nights music in our marquee. Sadly, Saturday was a wet and damp day but there was brilliant sunshine on Sunday. All games were run on time and a high standard of rugby was played. Galwegians Ladies had a great win over the All Sorts in the Ladies Final, beating the previous two years champions.

The men’s competition saw two great teams from Portlaoise play exceptional rugby. Tuam also fielded a great side. It was Oughterard men’s first venture here, and they are to be complemented for taking part. It was also a first outing for the Connemara ladies at this level. A great weekend was had by locals and visitors. There was a great welcome back for Emmet Ferron’s and Martin O’Malley

Sincere thanks to Supervalu and Lidl for their great help, also the Ambulance crew. Massive thank you to Rory O’Toole, Pete Smyth, Irene King, James Staunton, Gerry Delaney, PJ Heffernan, Kevin Keogh, Peter Keane, Owen Hayes, Des Fogerty and all the volunteers who helped massively throughout the weekend and not forgetting the referee’s who gave up their free time to officiate at the tournament.

Connemara RFC AGM

July 15th, 2013

There was a reasonably good attendance at Connemara RFC’s AGM at the Station House recently. Outgoing president Des Fogerty thanked the members for giving him the great honour of being president of such a great club. He regretted our exit from the All Ireland League, but said it was the end of a cycle. Emigration and injuries have played havoc.

Mr. Matt O’Sullivan, the incoming president, thanked Des for all his work during the previous two years and reminded him that the club had won three underage Connacht titles and an under 18 Connacht ladies title during his years in office. He wished him and his wife, Margaret, a happy semi retirement.

Next year’s committee is as follows:

Chairman: Aidan O Halloran

President: Matt O Sullivan

Vice President: Peter Keane

Secretary: Irene King-Staunton

Treasurer: Mary Lydon

Membership Secretary: Peter Smyth

Pro: Rory O Toole

Fixture Secretary: Gerry King
