Connemara R.F.C  v’s Sligo R.F.C – 24th September 2011

Connemara entered Saturdays encounter with Sligo knowing that it would be used as a benchmark to gauge the team’s prospects for the season to come. Despite playing well in all of their previous Connacht Senior League meetings, Connemara knew that the game against Sligo would be a good opportunity to test themselves against a team in their division. The game was played at a extraordinarily high tempo with both teams intent on attacking ball in hand rugby. Connemara had an early try harshly chalked off for crossing after some neat backs play. But Connemara didn’t have to wait long for a breakthrough with prop Emmet Ferron crossing after intricate passing by Connemara.  Sligo responded almost instantaneously crossing in the corner after a good team move. As the half time whistle blew Connemara led 10-8.

Rolling substitutes were a feature of the game and one of those said substitutes Colin Reilly crossed in the corner after a good team move left Connemara with a 5-1 overlap in the corner. Connemara’s high fitness levels were evident throughout the game as they finished the game extremely well. Connemara added a further try of Barbarian-esque quality late on. After a good team move centre Paddy Madden gave a delicious offload, reminiscent of Sonny Bill Williams which scrum half David Keogh gratefully gathered and crossed under the posts. The final whistle blew to great acclaim, final score 27-8.  This was Connemara’s first competitive win since March 2009 and was very well deserved.

We hope to get plenty more in the coming season.
