With the competitive season now started, a self-confessed rugby lover and writer by the name of JL Pagano came up with a very good idea indeed. Who is JL Pagano I hear you say? JL is well known on most social networking sites as “Harpin’ on Rugby”, which is the name of his Leinster and Ireland fan site.
JL Pagano was born in the USA but lived in Ireland since he was 8. He went to a big rugby school in Dublin and played a bit too. He is a diehard Leinster fan, season-ticket holder and lover of the banter that is unique to rugby union. JL has always harboured a desire to get into writing so the Harpin’ on Rugby fan site gives him the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.
This season he is doing something a bit different for Harpin’ On Rugby. He approached 6 clubs at various levels of the grass roots game and asked them to take part in his new feature, which he called “Roots & All”. Connemara RFC are absolutely delighted to be one of the chosen six clubs.
The idea of “Roots & All” is that the reader will become a fan of these 6 clubs and will follow the clubs progress each week throughout the 2011-12 season. The selected 6 teams include Junior, Senior & Women’s rugby teams.
Every Wednesday, on the Harpin’ on Rugby Facebook page and “Roots & All” blog, JL will publish interviews taken with a representative of each club. The selected representative for Connemara RFC is Irene King-Staunton – she who wears many hats within Connemara RFC!
Irene King-Staunton – “This is a fantastic idea. Not only will it raise the profile of all clubs involved but it will also raise awareness of how grass roots clubs function both on and off the field. It will certainly raise interest and support in all clubs involved and I’m delighted to be Connemara’s representative for the Roots & All feature for the season ahead”.
JL will ask each club how they got on the previous weekend and what they have planned for the next one, but also some more general questions about what life is like at a grass roots level. Each club will recieve questions tailored to their own club.
Although there are many websites who report news from grass roots clubs around the country, the Roots & All feature will look a little more closely at the smaller details in each of the clubs involved and follow their progress for an entire season.
Again, Connemara RFC are delighted to be part of this new feature and hope to have JL pay a visit to The Monastery Field throughout the season to sample a real taste of what Connemara RFC is all about!

The Connemara 1st XV’s competitive season will kick off on this coming Saturday, 27th August, with a home fixture against Buccaneers RFC in the Connacht Senior League. Supporter’s and spectator’s at The Monastery Field vill view a different type of rugby than what they have seen in recent years from the Connemara Blacks. Last year, with no threat of relegation due to the restructuring of the league, provided the club with an opportunity to blood a younger generation of player’s who were guided by their elder team mates, most of whom have a number of years of AIL rugby behind them.
2011-12 promises to be an exciting year for the squad and the club. A new coaching structure is in place with Peter Bracken at the helm. Pre-season training started earlier than usual. Some players had taken to the field as early as June, in preperation for the very successful Connemara 7’s Tournament. No break was taken – As soon as the 7’s was over these dedicated lads continued with training on the field and in the gym.
We urge all supporters to come along on Saturday to see the renewed enthuasism and optimistic outlook of this new, fit, fast and eager squad.

Congratulations to Mark Foyle, our football committee chairman and long time player with Connemara RFC, on competing and winning The Omey Dash Triathlon last weekend. The triathlon consisted of a 4.5km swim, an 18km cycle and 4.5km run in the beautiful area of Claddaghduff, Connemara . Mark, who has played at senior level rugby in the club for quite a few years has insisted that he has now retired from senior rugby. Great to see him attending training and fitness sessions though…maybe the boots aren’t hung up yet!
