Senior Team Update

July 30th, 2008

‘Pre-season training commenced on Thursday 17th July when Andrew Farley, current captain of Connacht and Connemara’s forwards coach for the coming season met up with the players for the first time. We had an excellent turn-out of 22 players while a number of others were unavailable for various reasons. A number of players have been doing weights work in the gym over the past number of weeks and, in general, the fitness level for this stage of the season is quite good.
Troy Nathan and Bennie Bester, new recruits last season, have both committed to the club for the coming season while the club has also recruited prop forward Jason East (Jason joins us from Buccaneers and he is currently a member of the Connacht Rugby Academy) and hooker Frank Leonard (formerly U.L. Bohemians) who now works in Connemara with TG4. Aden Kelly, who was our ‘foreign’ player last season has also indicated his desire to play with Connemara for the 2008-2009 season and appropriate arrangements will be made as soon as he completes his rugby-playing season in New Zealand.
On the negative side, we have lost two of last year’s regulars in Gerard Burke and John O’Brien. Gerard, Julie and family have moved to live in Canada and we wish them all every happiness in their new home. John has moved to Buccaneers and we wish him every success in Division 1 of the A.I.L. John has proved himself at all levels to date and has attained International and Provincial recognition at various levels. Without doubt, John will continue to excel as his career develops. We will follow his progress closely.’ (A. O’Halloran)
