Galwegians 31 Connemara 17

We started poorly when conceding a try nearly straight from the kickoff.  We got back into it when Thomas Roche picked up a bad pass from the Wegians backs and ran 35 metres to score under the posts. The try was converted by Shane Sweeney. After 15 minutes Galwegians scored another unconverted try which they followed with a converted penalty try a few minutes later. After 22 minutes Shane Sweeny converted  a penalty after we put some good phases together in their half. Unfortunately we were still struggling with their big pack and some slack tackling led to them scoring another converted try just before half time. The score was 24-10 at half time and with a decent wind behind us for the second half we felt we were still in it. The first 15 mins of the second half was our best period with our pack finally taking on the big Galwegians pack. We strung together some good phases with David O’Reilly, Colin Reilly, Derek Heanue and Eugene Conroy taking on some good ball. After a lot of pressure we failed to score and some poor tackling left Galwegians score another soft converted try. We had some good posession after this but our lack of match practise and sharpness led to a lot of turnovers, particularly around the ruck area.Just before full time Eugene Conroy took a nice runner to slice open their defense and score near the posts with Shane Sweey converting, putting a bit of gloss on the scoreline. In summary we handed Wegians four very soft tries. While there was some good individual performances, we defended, rucked/mauled and attacked poorly as a team/unit. Monivea at home next week- plenty to work on. (F. Wood)
